Exploring Kawagoe Old Town Area

Exploring Kawagoe Old Town Area

There is a quarter in the central part of Kawagoe City, where streets constructed in the Edo period remain intact.
This quarter is a popular spot for tourists visiting Saitama.
You will see a row of storehouses within walking distance from Kawagoe Station.
Each storehouse is alike, but, actually, they are all different in structure.
These unique storehouses make up a stately street.
Many of the storehouses are still operating as shops.
Visitors will feel as if they were shopping in town in the Edo period.

You will see a bell on the street of storehouses.
This bell has been telling the time to the townspeople through the ages.
The bell, which was burned out by fire and rebuilt many times, conveys the remnants of its beauty as a symbol of Kawagoe, loved by the townspeople since the Edo period.

There is a side street just behind the bell, called Kashiya Yokocho (lit. a confectionery alley).
This precious alley still maintains the atmosphere of an old Japanese shopping mall, rarely found these days.
The fragrant baking smell of rice crackers and sweet smell of confectionary (confectionery) waft through this alley.
The Ministry of the Environment recognizes Kashiya Yokocho as one of Japan's 100 Most Fragrant Landscapes.
Visitors will feel the atmosphere of the simple but fantastic old Japanese street from the fragrance of confectionery harmonized with the salespeople's voices calling out for prospective customers.
There are many other must-see places in Kawagoe, such as Kita-in and Miyoshino Shrine.
Kita-in is a temple closely associated with the Tokugawa Shogun.
This temple has the statues of Five Hundred Rakan, disciples of the Buddha, and most of the buildings of the temple are designated national cultural assets.
Legend has it that Miyoshino Shrine served as a stage for "Toryanse," a Japanese children's song.

Honmaru Goten

*KOEDO KAWAGOE Tourist Association

During the Edo Period in 1848, Honmaru Goten was built by Matsudaira Naritsune, a Kawagoe feudal domain master who was awarded with 1.7 million koku (unit used to express the rank of a feudal master).
The oldest building in Kawagoe Honmaru Goten has been created with a samurai-like calmness. Kawagoe Castle was built by Oogigayatsu Uesugi Mochitomo to challenge Kogakubo Ashikaga Shigeuji, and in 1457 ordered Vassal Ota Michizane and Ota Dokan to construct the castle.

In 1639, Tokugawa Shogunate leader and Kawagoe feudal domain master Matsudaira Nobutsuna implemented a large scale construction project to expand Kawagoe Castle.
After the Meiji Restoration, Honmaru Goten was torn down and what remains today is only one part of what was reconstructed in 1848 - the entrance and the main hall used as waiting rooms for feudal lords who came on missions.
Once in the entrance, the hallway surrounds the room.
Some rooms are decorated very simply, but the drawings found on the cedar doors and the structure of the driveway entrance are very elaborate.
The construction can be called a palace. Dolls representing the feudal lords are found in the waiting rooms and it almost seems as if you can hear conversations from that era.

Kita-in Temple

*KOEDO KAWAGOE Tourist Association

Kita-in Temple
The 'Tendaishu' is a renowned temple first built by mentor Jikakudaishi in 830.
It was officially known as 'Seiya San Muryojyuji Kita-in' Temple.

This is known as the temple where Meiso Tenkai Soujyou was the head priest and it possesses many cultural assets such as buildings which were relocated from Edo Castle.
It is the most famous temple in Saitama Prefecture and is renowned nationwide.

When Tenkai Soujyou, who was highly trusted by Tokugawa Ieyasu, became the 27th head priest the temple became specially protected by the regime.

Also relocated was the 'Kyakuden', the birthplace of Iemitsu, with murals and sumi drawings more luxurious than those in Edo Castle and 'Shoin' a room used for dressing and makeup by the 3rd generation Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu's nanny Kasuga no Tsubone.

Many of these historical buildings related to Edo Castle are recognized as important cultural assets.
There is also the Senba Toshogu Shrine, one of the three major Toshogu Shrines of Japan, which has a strong association with the Tokugawa Family that built the Edo Period.

Popular among tourists are the 500 Statues of Rakan of the Kita-in Temple, which is one of the three major Rakan of Japan.
It has approximately 540 stone buddhas that precisely express human emotions.

Throughout the year, there are many events allowing people to enjoy the different seasons of the temple, such as the 'Daruma Fair' on New Year's Day, 'Setsubun' in February and the 'Cherry Blossom Festival' in spring.

Candy Alley ( Kashiya Yokochō)

*KOEDO KAWAGOE Tourist Association

"Kashiya Yokocho" (Penny Candy Alley) is a famous alley in Kawagoe with a stone-paved alley embedded with colorful glass that is lined with 22 traditional style Japanese candy shops.
The candy shops lined along this alley pass down the simple and nostalgic taste of days gone by. Once anyone steps foot in one of these stores, they feel like a child again.
This place is where all generations, both children who are unfamiliar with traditional candy and adults who feel nostalgic, become excited.

It is said that the beginning of this Kashiya Yokocho was in the early Meiji Period when Suzuki Tozaemon started to make candy in this prospering town in front of Yojuin Temple.
In 1923, after Tokyo was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake, this area became the main producer and supplier of candy.
There were more than 70 shops in the early Showa Period but due to the war and changes in lifestyle the number has decreased.
But even as time changes, the atmosphere of the alley and spirit of the store owners when they call out to potential customers, fills people with a feeling of comfort.

In 2001, the simple and nostalgic scent of Kashiya Yokocho was chosen as one of the "100 Scent Sceneries" by the Ministry of the Environment.

Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿)

*japan-guide.com

Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿), meaning "the palace in the inner-most circle of defense", is the only surviving building of the former Kawagoe Castle.
It used to serve as the lord's residence and offices.

Kawagoe Castle was originally built in 1457. When Tokugawa Ieyasu took over its rule, he installed an important loyal subject as its lord, due to Kawagoe's importance as a trade city and a strategic point of defense north of the capital. Throughout the Edo Period, 21 lords, all closely allied with the Tokugawa Shogunate, resided at Kawagoe Castle.

Today's structure was added to the castle in 1848, shortly before the end of the feudal age. Recently renovated and reopened to the public in 2011, it has spacious tatami rooms, a garden, and pictures of cultural heritage which are put on display. Visitors are also able to sit with three models of a feudal lord and his vassals, and imagine what it must have been like to hold a discussion in that room.

Kawagoe City Museum

*japan-guide.com

The Kawagoe City Museum introduces visitors to the history and culture of Kawagoe.
It houses exhibits from the ancient times to modern times.
Through excavated relics, preserved artifacts, models and actual-sized replicas, visitors can travel through time and learn about the changes in the city.

The process of building Kurazukuri structures is explained with a model of it, which reveals the various unique layers involved in its construction.
Other models include a geographical representation of the former castle town, illustrating how Kawagoe took shape over the centuries.

From about the 17th century, ties between Kawagoe and Edo (present day Tokyo) began to deepen, and a lot of Kawagoe's cultural heritage had been influenced by the Edo culture.
Visitors will be able to learn about how Kawagoe became known as "Little Edo" here.

The City Art Museum is located just next to the City Museum.
It exhibits works mainly by artists from or related to the city. The majority of the permanent collections on display are contemporary art pieces, but the museum holds special exhibitions about four times a year, displaying art of different styles.

Candy Alley (菓子屋横丁, Kashiya Yokochō)

*japan-guide.com

Candy Alley (菓子屋横丁, Kashiya Yokochō) is a little shopping street adjacent to the Warehouse District. It is lined by stores selling traditional Japanese sweets and cakes, which gave the alley its name.
Among the treats sold are various candies, rice crackers, karinto (sugar coated, deep fried cookies), ice cream, and cakes made of red bean paste and sweet potatoes.
Also available are small toys and accessories which make nice souvenirs to take home.

Immediately following the Great Earthquake of 1923, Tokyo experienced a great shortfall in supply of Japanese sweets; orders made to the candy stores in Kashiya Yokocho thereby surged.
At one point in the early Showa Period, more than 70 such stores existed.
These days there remain just over 20, providing various delights for their customers.
The Candy Alley is a wonderful place for trying traditional Japanese sweets, while experiencing a nostalgic atmosphere from past decades.

Kitain (喜多院):Gohyaku Rakan。Semba Toshogu Shrine。Nakain

*japan-guide.com

Kawagoe's Kitain (喜多院) is the head temple of the Tendai Sect in the Kanto Region.
Among its halls are the only remaining palace buildings of the former Edo Castle.
Originally part of a three-temple complex built in 830, Kitain flourished and became the main temple at the turn of the 17th century under the leadership of Tenkai, an extraordinary personality who developed trusted friendships with the first three shogun of the Edo Period.

In 1638, a fire destroyed most of Kitain.
To help rebuilding it, the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, ordered several palace buildings to be moved from Edo Castle to Kawagoe.
These are today the only surviving buildings of Edo Castle because of the damage Tokyo suffered during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and World War II.
One of the rooms, decorated with a floral ceiling and a set of a general's armor, is believed to be where Iemitsu was born.

Gohyaku Rakan statues
Another highlight of a visit to Kitain are the Gohyaku Rakan statues, 540 stone statues of the disciples of Buddha, each with its own facial expression. It is interesting to wander amongst the statues, which offer good photo opportunities. They are located in a small separate courtyard on the temple grounds.

Semba Toshogu Shrine
After the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu, passed away in Sunpu (present day Shizuoka), his remains were transported to Nikko. During the journey, a memorial service was held by Tenkai at Kitain, which resulted in the Semba Toshogu Shrine being built within its premises.
Accordingly, the three most important Toshogu shrines in Japan are the ones in Shizuoka, Kawagoe and Nikko, respectively.

Nakain
To complete the tour of the Kitain area, drop by Nakain ("Middle Temple"), which was one temple of the initial three-temple complex.
It exists as a separate institution today and can be reached in a five minute walk.
Not much survives of the third temple, the Minamiin ("South Temple").

Warehouse District (蔵造りの町並み, Kurazukuri no Machinami)

*japan-guide.com

Kawagoe's Warehouse District (蔵造りの町並み, Kurazukuri no Machinami) provides a nostalgic scene from the Edo Period (1603-1867).
The word "kura" means "warehouse" in Japanese, and Kurazukuri are clay-walled warehouse-styled buildings that are constructed with an Edo architectural flavor.

In the old days, Kawagoe was an important commercial town supplying resources to Edo (present day Tokyo).
Thanks to the thriving trade, many merchants grew wealthy enough to build not only their warehouses but also their stores in the Kurazukuri style, more so than it was usual in other towns.
Some of the buildings managed to survive to this day.
Mostly housing shops and restaurants, they can be found along the main Kurazukuri Street which stretches a few hundred meters long.
Heavy regular car traffic along the street, however, takes away a lot of the historic atmosphere and limits pedestrians to narrow sidewalks.

Kurazukuri Street
In the past, Japanese cities consisted almost exclusively of wooden buildings, which made them vulnerable to fires.
Kurazukuri construction was used both to make a structure fireproof and to secure it against intruders.
They were very expensive to build, as their construction involved making thick walls consisting of several layers.
Thanks to the prosperous trade with Edo, the merchants of Kawagoe flourished, and many showed their wealth by building as good-looking a structure as they could afford.

Just a short distance from the main street stands the Bell Tower (時の鐘, Toki no Kane), a landmark and symbol of Kawagoe.
It chimes four times a day (6:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00). The tower was rebuilt in 1894, after the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893 had destroyed the previous structure.

The Bell Tower
One of the houses which is open to the public is the Museum of Kurazukuri.
The museum is housed in what used to be a tobacco wholesaler's shop.
Visitors can have a closer view of what a Kurazukuri building looks from the inside beyond the store front.
Some of the exhibits include traditional machines used in the past.
The museum is located along the main street.

A minute's walk away is the Candy Alley (Kashiya Yokocho). It is a wonderful place for trying some traditional Japanese sweets, while experiencing an ambience of past decades.

Named after the Taisho Period (1912-1926), the Taisho-roman Street is located between Hon-Kawagoe Station and the Warehouse District.
The Taisho-styled architecture adds character to the walk towards the Kurazukuri.

Museum of Kurazukuri
The Kawagoe Festival started more than 360 years ago and is celebrated annually for two days on the third weekend of October in the Warehouse District.
It is the festival of the nearby Hikawa Shrine and involves the parading of tall, elaborately decorated floats through the streets of the city.

For those who would like have a feel of the festival but are not able to visit Kawagoe at the time, a visit to the Kawagoe Festival Museum provides a glimpse of the experience.
It houses a couple of the floats and puts on periodical shows to simulate the atmosphere of the festival.

The Warehouse District can be reached in a 10-15 minute walk along the main street from Hon-Kawagoe Station.
It takes about an additional ten minutes from Kawagoe Station or an additional five minutes from Kawagoe-shi Station.

Kawagoe

(japan-guide.com)
Kawagoe

Kawagoe (川越) is located about 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo and is suitable as a day trip destination.
Its main street, lined with Kurazukuri (clay-walled warehouse-styled) buildings, retains an ambience reminiscent of an old town from the Edo Period (1603-1867) and allows us to imagine the streets from past centuries.
Thereby, Kawagoe became known as "Little Edo".

During the Edo Period, Kawagoe prospered as a supplier of commodities to Tokyo (then named Edo).
As Kawagoe was an important city to the capital for trade and strategic purposes, the shogun installed some of their most loyal men as lords of Kawagoe Castle.
Close ties ensued between the two cities and over the years, Kawagoe inherited many aspects of the Edo culture and architecture.

One of the most important temples in the Greater Tokyo area, Kitain Temple, is Kawagoe's other main attraction. It is home to the only remaining structures of the former Edo Castle.
